Capstone Intensive Overview
Capstone intensives help doctoral candidates in select programs make progress in writing their capstone study proposals. This supportive experience provides an opportunity for attendees to work directly with experienced faculty members who have expertise in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research design, and Writing Center faculty, who can help participants strengthen skills required to write the capstone.
In addition to advancing capstone writing progress, the intensives provide participants an opportunity to network with others who are at the same stage of the writing process and the potential to develop writing support groups.
During the intensive, participants:
- Meet with a faculty member for research feedback.
- Meet with a Writing Center faculty member for writing feedback.
- Network with colleagues at the same stage of the writing process and develop ongoing writing support groups.
Benefits of Attending
Writing a capstone study can be a difficult and lonely experience, compounded by the commitments and obligations of everyday life outside of your academics. The retreat is designed to be a getaway from those obligations. Participants who attend in-person intensives stay at the retreat hotel and spend every day—and evenings—drafting, receiving on-site faculty feedback, revising, and editing.
Doctoral candidates who have attended previous intensives have made notable progress in their writing and thinking and have appreciated the opportunities provided through the CI retreat for one-on-one guidance and support. The goal is for participants to leave the intensive with material drafted under various sections of their capstone proposal. If you are coming to the experience with this material already drafted, the staff will work with you to revise and refine it. Whether you are just beginning the proposal or are pulling together the draft to finish it, the faculty can offer guidance to help you organize and present their research ideas in their proposal using correct APA style and conventions of good scholarly writing.
